Felicia, I'm wondering if changing your diet would result in the same benefit of supplementation without the harmful future consequences.

I guess this means that those of us who've taken TheraTears Nutrition capsules (fish oil, flaxseed, vitamins, and omega 3) for dry eyes will need to find other remedies.

Sheila, I think it wouldn't hurt you one bit to add more green vegetables, and particularly sea vegetables like seaweed. That would naturally increase your iodine and also give you lots of phytonutrients, essential nutrients to optimum health found in naturally in dark green leafy foods. It will support healthy thyroid function, and general health too. Good luck!

I had a bad flu a lot of years ago, it started on the 1st of January, because I work in the acute sector in a hospital, I felt I could not stay off work, although I felt so unwell I felt the company needed me, how stupid was I. I continued to work feeling very unwell, until the 21st of January, when I became so ill I had to go off work, then diagnosed with M.E. I was off work for 14 months, throughout that time & until today, I think my problem relates to under active thyroid. yes I did have my thyroid function checked they said it was ok, but I believe they do not have the proper results to compare thyroid function test.I was always a very active person, I still cannot understand what has robbed me of my energy.I know through experience that ME is frowned upon, we are classed as lazy, far removed from the truth, in my opinion they are needing to put a lot of research into the immune system, I would take iodine galore if I thought it would help me.

I'm choosing the sun as my source of B12 too. There are numerous studies recently connecting heart disease, cancer and early death with supplements. The recommended B12 supplementation level is very sketchy too. Even if you are strictly vegan, you may still get adequate B12 from your supplemented foods, like soy milk and tofu. You can also ask your doctor to check your B12 level. Great questions Emily!

I also have been told by my Dr. to take vitamin D supplements (my level was 27) and am skeptical. I started taking the 2000 iu of D3 a day she recommended, but cut back to taking 400-800 iu of D2 (I have been a vegan for about a year) every other day or so until the sun comes back. Do you think that is a reasonably safe amount? You call supplements "silly", but I feel I must take b12. What is you opinion on b12 supplementation, ie: what type, how much and how often? This is all very confusing. Also, what do you think of this article published by the Harvard School of Public Health regarding the multivitamin and mortality study you mentioned? http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/multivitamin/?__utma=1.1190722010.1327290205.1327290205.1329510111.2&__utmb=1.1.10.1329510111&__utmc=1&__utmx=-&__utmz=1.1329510111.2.2.utmcsr=hsph.harvard.edu|utmccn=(referral)|utmcmd=referral|utmcct=/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/supplement-studies/index.html&__utmv=-&__utmk=137393328
